Gullane No.2
The Champion’s Links
Gullane No.2 was designed in 1898 by Willie Park Jnr who was Open Champion in 1885 and 1887 and a renowned golf architect, designing other high-profile courses such as Sunningdale Old and Olympia Fields.
Named because it was second course to be created at Gullane, No.2 is also a championship links, having hosted national amateur championships and The Open Final Qualifying.
From Babe Zacharias to Peter Thomson, many great champions have competed and won on No.2 and it is regarded by many members as their favourite course.
More mainstream in length and green size than No.1, Gullane No.2 is still a major challenge for golfers of all levels and abilities. Each nine can play easy or hard depending on the wind direction and the views are simply stunning.
Panoramic Views
The par-4 4th hole is one of the best holes at Gullane and not only for its view down over the courses to the Firth of Forth. A challenging downhill drive sets up a mid to long-iron approach over five cross bunkers to a generous green with a deep swale on the right. Par here is always a good score.
Championship Holes
The 8th hole with its tee overlooking the nature reserve is one of the most beautiful spots on any of the courses. This and the previous 7th were part of the Scottish Open course and you can see why. The 8th fairway is guarded by two bunkers either side and then the approach has to clear three cross bunkers to reach a sloping green with a narrow entrance.
The Aberlady Bay Loop
It’s hard to pick the best hole from the loop of 11, 12 and 13 as they are all so special in their own way. Soak up the view over the vast dunes from the long downhill par-3 11th where the generous green will catch a well hit shot.
The 12th winds out into the wilderness towards a raised green with three pot bunkers guarding it. Then hit a tee shot between the bunkers and rise up to the two-tiered 13th green. Make three pars round this loop and you will be on the way to a great score.
Village Welcome
Depending on the wind direction, the last five holes will break your score or make it. The treacherous 14th from its dramatic raised tee requires accuracy both with the drive and the approach to the green.
The par-5 16th takes you to the crest of the hill before the final two short par-4s welcome you back to the Village Of Golf with the hope of a birdie on the card to finish your round with an even bigger smile.
