Gullane No.3

Gullane No.3

Gullane’s Gem

Gullane No.3 may be the shortest course at Gullane, but it is long on history having opened in 1910. It is also long on fun for golfers of all abilities and widely regarded as Gullane’s Gem.

Like No.1 there is no official designer, but we can say this is a true members’ course. The design of Gullane No.3 was overseen by the committee of the day and built by the greenkeeper William Logan and his team. A true club effort and why our gem of a course is treasured by today’s members too.

Better players will have their long games tested from the tee and their short games tested around the smaller greens. Higher handicappers will appreciate a course that offers many chances for that first par, birdie or lowest ever round.

The green complexes on No.3 are regarded by our Course Manager as the best at Gullane. They are compact and the shapes create unique challenges, especially when the course is playing hard and fast.

You will enjoy it for its challenge and the panoramas as it takes you down towards Aberlady Bay and stunning views over the nature reserve in Aberlady Bay and the Firth of Forth

Feel Good Course

The first three and last three holes sit on the south side of the main road into Gullane and provide an ideal loop for a quick 6 holes. However, you would be missing out on the fantastic holes on Gullane Hill. No wonder some members refer to Gullane No.3 as ‘the feel good’ course.

The par-3 2nd is a great short hole that is well bunkered with a green sloping away from you. You need to be warmed up and ready to go to get your par at this hole.

Panoramic Links

The raised 7th tee provides a panoramic view over Luffness New and down to Aberlady Bay that offers a different aspect over the Firth of Forth to the other courses. The tee shot needs to avoid the cross bunkers and aiming down the left will afford the best angle to attack the hole on this sloping green.

Village Welcome

The sharply downhill par-3 15th is the hole everyone remembers and not only for the view to the Village Of Golf and the Lammermuir Hills in the distance.

Depending on the wind this hole can be anything from a long iron to a putter. The bowl-shaped green gathers in anything short, but repels anything wide or long, and is remembered by many aspiring golfers for their first par – or birdie!

Playing With History

As you head home the 17th hole is the last surviving hole from the very first layout of Gullane and the challenge is still there. The uphill tee shot needs to hug the left of the fairway to open up the raised green. The approach needs to be accurate to carry the swale before the green and then stop by the flag.

Don’t be fooled by its length as No.3 is a real test of shotmaking where restraint, accuracy and correct club selection is key. Gullane No.3 epitomises what golf should be – a fun round of golf.
