Gullane Hosts Leading Golfers at Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship
Gullane Golf Club will host the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship for the fifth time this summer as one of Scottish Golf’s flagship events returns to East Lothian from 29 July to 2 August.
The country’s leading amateur golfers will converge on the village to battle it out for one of the most coveted titles in the domestic calendar, with the championship being played over Gullane’s renowned No.1 and No.2 courses.
Boasting an impressive history of past champions which includes Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie (1985), three-time European Tour winner Stephen Gallacher (1992) and No.14 in the world Robert MacIntyre, who won the last time the Championship was held in East Lothian when he was the victor at Muirfield ten years ago.
Former GB&I Walker Cup player Michael Stewart was crowned Scottish Men’s Amateur Champion when Gullane last hosted the event back in 2010, with ex-European Tour player George Murray (2004) and amateur legend Charlie Green (1983) the previous winners, who won for a third time at Gullane, beating fellow Scottish International and future golf journalist John Huggan in the final.
The Club’s own members have also achieved success in the Championship with Tom Dobson winning 100 years ago in 1925 and more recently, Oliver Mukherjee (pictured below) became the youngest ever winner of the Championship at the age of just 15 when he defeated Gregor Tait to clinch the title in a dramatic final at Glasgow Golf Club’s Gailes Links in 2022. The Duke University golf scholar will be hoping to put his local knowledge to good use as he goes in search of a second national title on home turf in July.
Reigning Gullane club champion Sam Hall will be another local favourite aiming to capitalise on home advantage, having also won the Lothians Championship last year, while a strong Gullane contingent could also include seasoned campaigner Thomas Simmonds, US college-based Harry Bent and Joe MacPherson and current Junior members Archie Cook and Alexander Yuille.
Club captain Colin Steele welcomed the announcement of Gullane as host venue: “We are very proud to be hosting the Scottish Men’s Amateur Championship for a fifth time this year and looking forward to welcoming the best amateur golfers in Scotland to the club.
“It is a great honour to have been selected by Scottish Golf for what is such as a prestigious event and the roll call of past champions underscores what an important event it is. Our Course Manager Paul Armour will have both courses in their usual pristine condition for the week and competitors will be relishing the opportunity to test their skills on two incredible links courses.”
A field of 264 players will compete in the stroke play qualifying with a round each over Gullane No.1 and No.2, before the leading 64 players progressing to the match play stages on No.1 over the final three days of the event, with the 36-hole final taking place on Saturday 2nd August.
The championship is a counting event for World Amateur Golf Rankings and could prove pivotal for the leading Scottish players vying for Walker Cup selection.
Open to Scottish golfers, the handicap limit for the event is 6.4 with a closing date for entries of Monday 30 June.
