Gullane Awarded GEO Environmental Certification
Gullane Golf Club is delighted to announce that it has achieved GEO Certified® status, the global mark of excellence for sustainability in golf.
The East Lothian club, which boasts three internationally acclaimed courses, two clubhouses and a world-class practice facility, has been recognised by the GEO Foundation for its continued commitment to sustainability, protecting the environment and reducing its carbon footprint, achieving the status for work undertaken over the past three years, both on and off the course.
GEO Certification is assured by GEO Foundation – the not-for-profit organisation dedicated to delivering programmes that help people on the ground to evaluate, improve and credibly communicate their sustainability work across the agenda of nature, resources, community and climate action.
GEO Certified is the symbol of a great golf environment, confirming that the Club satisfies all GEO certification criteria; meeting a credible standard in the areas of nature, resources and community, and is committed to continual improvement. The comprehensive Certification Report provides a detailed account of the continued commitment made to maintain wider sustainability issues.

The club takes its role as custodian of the land very seriously and is committed to fostering nature, conserving resources such as water and energy, and taking several measures to reduce our carbon footprint in and around the course. We have delivered a number of key projects in working towards our GEO status and are committed to a series of ongoing activities to further improve our practices.”

Sustainable Water Management
Gullane Golf Club employs a precise and proactive approach to water management, ensuring every drop is used efficiently. Our team identifies and irrigates only the areas that genuinely require it. We’re currently upgrading our irrigation system, replacing pop-up inserts to allow for more targeted watering. This modification will enable us to adjust pop-ups to 180 degrees, eliminating unnecessary watering of the rough and significantly reducing water waste. Furthermore, we’ve proactively incorporated a drought-tolerant seed mix for overseeding our fairways. This helps to maintain excellent grass coverage even during extended dry periods, reducing the need for frequent irrigation and conserving valuable water resources.
Eco-Conscious Machinery Use
Our greenkeeping operations prioritize minimizing our environmental footprint, particularly through our machinery use, transitioning from fuel-powered equipment to more eco-friendly electric alternatives. Diesel mowers, petrol Flymos, and petrol strimmers have all been replaced with electric equivalents. This shift not only significantly reduces our carbon emissions but also contributes to a quieter, more pleasant environment by cutting down on noise pollution. To further enhance our sustainable practices, we strategically charge our electric machinery during off-peak hours, reducing demand on the national grid and promoting a more stable energy supply.

Through discussions and a course tour, it is evident that staff are empowered to make sustainability a core element of the club’s operations and long-term success.
Recently, the team has taken a proactive step by engaging committee members in shaping their sustainability vision. This has led to the creation of the Natural Heritage Committee, a promising initiative aimed at embedding environmental responsibility into the club’s culture and practices.
